Great Expectations originally made its debut as a serial in All The Year Round between 1860 - 1861. The protagonist of the story is a young boy named Pip. The story revolves around his journey through life after his encounter with an escaped convict named Abel Magwitch. Pip is brought up by his sister and her comical husband, Joe. He is introduced to Miss Havisham, who is crucial to his development. Miss Havisham is an old, and bitter lady who was abandoned at the alter when she was younger. As a result, she has brought up her daughter, Estella, to take revenge for her. This revenge is taken out on Pip when he falls in love with her. Pip then receives a fund of wealth from an unknown person and is sent to London with the lawyer Jaggers. After losing everything, Estella marries another man. Pip then finds out that the source of the money was Magwitch himself. Magwitch is eventually sentenced to death and after many years of working abroad Pip returns. He finds Estella, her husband now dead, and discovers that her coldness has been replaced by a sad kindness. The two leave hand in hand, Pip believing that they will never be separated again.
